The first real snowfall usually isn't far off once November arrives in the Greater London area, and with it come the salt trucks. Road salt and sidewalk de-icer do their job outside, but every boot that comes through the door brings some of it in. Over a long Ontario winter, that white crust, gritty sand, and melting slush can dull finishes, stain grout, and wear down carpet. A little preparation now saves a lot of scrubbing in March.
Set Up Your Entry for Winter
The easiest win is at the door. A coarse outdoor mat scrapes off snow and sand, and an absorbent indoor mat catches the moisture and fine grit that's left. Add a boot tray so wet footwear isn't dripping on the floor, and a small bench so family and guests can sit down to take boots off rather than walking further into the house. If your entry floor is already worn out, our guide to the best flooring for Ontario's four seasons covers floors that handle salt and slush well.
Care Tips by Floor Type
- Hardwood: sweep often, wipe salt residue promptly, and use a barely damp mop with a cleaner made for wood - never a steam mop.
- Luxury vinyl plank: handles water well, but grit can still scratch the wear layer, so sweep first and mop with a pH-neutral cleaner.
- Laminate: use a barely damp mop and don't let puddles sit on the seams.
- Tile: rinse away salt film with clean water and watch the grout near the door.
- Carpet: vacuum entry areas frequently and blot slushy spots rather than rubbing them.
Dealing With Salt Residue
That chalky white haze is salt that's dried on the surface. On hard floors, a damp microfibre mop with the right cleaner usually lifts it, followed by a clean-water pass if a film remains. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, which can damage finishes. On carpet, let the area dry fully, vacuum up the crystals, and then treat any remaining mark as the carpet's care instructions recommend.
Don't Forget Dry Indoor Air
Winter in Southwestern Ontario brings dry, heated air indoors, and wood floors respond by shrinking slightly. Small seasonal gaps between hardwood boards are common in January and February and usually close up again as humidity returns in spring. Many homeowners run a humidifier during heating season to keep indoor humidity more consistent, which is easier on wood floors, trim, and furniture alike.
Floors that are past saving with a good clean may simply be ready for replacement. If you'd like to see options, our Design Consultants bring full-size samples right to your home in London, Komoka, and across the area.
