Engineered hardwood done right
Engineered hardwood is real wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks identical to [solid hardwood](/real-solid-hardwood-flooring) underfoot but handles humidity swings - like the jump from a dry Southwestern Ontario winter to a humid July - without cupping, gapping, or buckling. That makes it the right pick for basements, slab-on-grade homes, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heating, and it's a natural fit for the newer subdivisions going up around The Greater London Area.
London Flooring Canada stocks engineered hardwood from Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, and Armstrong - the same brands designers specify on luxury builds, brought to your door for the in-home consultation instead of a showroom aisle.

Why homeowners choose engineered
Engineered hardwood gives you most of the benefits of solid wood with far less climate sensitivity - a real advantage in a region with true four-season swings.
- Stable on concrete slabs and over radiant heat
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") that solid wood can't deliver
- Pre-finished from the factory with aluminum-oxide topcoats
- Floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation - whatever your subfloor needs
- Built to hold up through decades of Ontario seasonal humidity swings

Most engineered hardwood is made from European or American oak, but you can also get maple, walnut, hickory, and exotic species. Plank widths run from a classic 3" up to designer 9"-wide boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks.

Professional installation
Our installers assess your subfloor first - moisture testing on concrete, joist inspection on plywood, flatness gauges everywhere - and we build in proper acclimation time so the wood settles to your home before installation. We then recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will perform best. Every quote includes baseboard removal/reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor. Curious what it costs? Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It tolerates the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or burst pipe should still be cleaned up promptly. For a fully waterproof option in the same wood-look, ask us about [luxury vinyl plank](/luxury-vinyl-plank).
Yes - this is one of engineered hardwood's biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to prevent gapping.
Floating is faster and easier to repair. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. Over concrete we typically recommend glue-down; over plywood, either works.
That's exactly what it's designed for. The plywood core resists the expansion and contraction that solid wood can experience between a dry Ontario winter and a humid summer, which is why it's our default recommendation for basements and homes with forced-air heat running hard for months at a time.
